9 Ways to Score the Best Deal While Shopping

9 Ways to Score the Best Deal While Shopping

Happy Wednesday!

I get a lot of questions about how I always score the best deals; today I’m going to tell you how! (It really isn’t much of a secret, it’s all about being smart about how you shop!).

P.S. I am by no means some expert shopper, but I am a pretty intense bargain hunter.

First of all, let me share with you the two no brainers that will 100% give you money every time you spend:

  1. Ebates. Whenever I can, I try to shop online if the store is signed up with Ebates. Not every store is signed up with them, but quite a few are. If you don’t know your size, you can always go into store to try on first, and then purchase it online. Or, if the online store allows free returns, then you’re in luck – order different sizes to try on! Sometimes Ebates even has double cashback days – always sign up for email alerts to keep posted! Here is a link you can sign up with!
  2. A cash back credit card. For the longest time I was signed up with airmiles, however… after doing some extensive thinking, I decided to go with a cashback card. There are usually lots of promotions going around for first-time card holders, as well as several different cash back cards offering different incentives. Do your research and find out which one best suits your lifestyle!9 Ways to Score the Best Deal While Shopping
And then here are some more tips…
  3. Always, always, always look for online coupons. More often then not, a lot of retailers offer online coupons for first time shoppers/orders on their site if you sign up for their emails. Take advantage of this. Otherwise, you can always search up “name of store coupons” and sometimes online codes will pop up! Chris and I did this for pizza 73 once and we ended up getting two medium custom pizzas for something like $5 each LOL. Which brings me to the next point…
  4. Sign up for emails for the retailers you shop most frequently from. You will be the first to be notified about sales and coupon codes!
  5. GO TO THE SALE SECTION. I rarely buy anything at full price unless I am absolutely in love with it, which is, well, rare.
  6. Thrift. If you haven’t thrifted before or you have your reservations about thrifting, get over it and get into a thrift store STAT. You are missing out so hard. Everything is unique, one of a kind, or a sweet cop. Thrifting requires a lot of patience, but if you’re willing to stick it out, you can come out with lots of loots. Sometimes certain thrift stores will mark up their prices drastically, but they too, may offer special sales every now and then. For novice thrifters, Value Village does have 50% off sales and Goodwill has different coloured tag sales, so be sure to stay on top of that! And for those of you who may not be into the super vintage-y things, there are lots of local consignment stores that carry more modern, up-to-date clothing.
  7. Discount stores like Winners and Marshalls sometimes carry winners (ha ha ha) in their stores for a great price. I’ve copped a sweet pair of black ripped jeans for $13 and a black distressed denim jacket for $18 on my last trip there!
  8. Do not spend a lot on trendy items. “Trendy” items differ from person to person, however, if you don’t see yourself wearing it often down the road, don’t spend a crap ton of money on it. There are a bunch of stores (and discount stores) that sell trendy items for cheap at the mall. It may not be the best quality, but it’s a great way to try out a trend first without the investment in case it ain’t what you really want.
  9. Use an app/plugin that tells you when your items go on sale! I just started using Shoptagr, a plugin that tells me when the item on my wishlist goes on sale. I haven’t decided if I love it just yet, but it’s definitely handy to have!

And finally…. something that I am currently trying to learn is…
You will never get all the best deals.
Sometimes by the time an item you wants drops to a certain price point, the size or colour you want might not be available anymore. Use your judgment to decide whether or not you could live down how much you’re paying for something if you really want it!

Canmore, Alberta: East End Of Rundle hike

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

HAPPY THURSDAY!
Oh, my, goodness…. you guys.
For a while now Chris has been saying how much he wanted to head out to the mountains and hike, but our summer has been pretty busy and it’s been effing HOT. He mentioned wanting to hike up East End of Rundle (EEOR), but was wary going with me as I exhaust easily since being sick (I literally must nap in-between events when we have a jam packed day).  However…. I was set to prove him wrong.

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

Keep in mind I have zero interest or experience in exercising in any way, shape, or form. I have never scrambled before. Nor do I have hiking shoes. Or anything hiking related. I’ve always enjoyed going out to the mountains to look at them… but achieving hikes rated as “difficult” on trail peak has never been my thing. The most difficult hike I did was last summer; we did Bourgeau Lake (that one is hella long), and it was a pretty big feat for me!

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

We decided to head out late Saturday afternoon two weekends ago due to the weather (it was going to be pretty hot) and because we wanted to catch sunset on the mountain. We actually drove out to the wrong place and hiked down Goat Creek Trail by accident thinking it was EEOR. Approximately 20-25 minutes into the hike we realized we were not in the right place, so we hiked back up and drove back out to try to find the beginning of Rundle. Turns out it was a random little pathway on the side of the road that went straight uphill and looked super sketch. There was also a sign warning us not to touch a bomb if we saw one. Nice.

I wore Nike Roshes that day (It was my only pair of sneakers I had at Chris’ place that day) thinking it would be fine, but boy, WAS I WRONG. It was not bad going uphill at all, in fact, it was actually pretty fun! I was crawling on all fours at some point because it was pretty steep (and I’m a chicken) but I trucked on.

As we continued to go uphill, a sinking feeling sat in my chest as I realized this was going to be a bitch going down… I was pretty sure I was going to lose my toenails from my foot hitting up against my shoes going downhill (It happened on our hike back from Bourgeau). Renee shared her power-up gummies with us that she got from MEC and I was dead sure it worked because I had crazy bursts of energy going uphill, hahaha!

The view at the top was so worth it! It was actually very windy and cloudy that day (it drizzled on us a bit as we went downhill). I saw marmots for the very first time in my life and it was kinda fun to see! A squirrel was on the prowl for Long’s sandwich and he attempted to lure it several times for photos (as seen below):

Renee lent me her walking sticks to go downhill, but my shoes were a poor choice and I was sliding everywhere regardless… not gonna lie, I wasn’t sure if I would make it down in one piece. I kept eyeing the helicopter that flew overhead and wondered if I would need to make the call, HAHAHA. I ended up sliding down basically the entire mountain on my ass, lifting myself with my wrists and legs. I looked like an idiot and it was probably 100x more work than I needed to put in if I had better shoes. Although, I do have to give Long and Chris lots of kudos for making it down fine in their runners, they made it look like a stroll while I lagged behind, and Renee was behind me encouraging me the whole way down, HAHAHA. We actually hiked in the dark near the last quarter of the hike, as the sun went down. We were off path for what seemed like forever, sliding down random rocks and being confused about where we were. I was terrified we were going to get eaten by bears!

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

All in all, it was a surprisingly fun hike going up and a total hell hole coming down. Note to self to get proper hiking boots next time, and maybe a hike with no scrambling or traversing involved (just kidding, but not really). Would I do it again? … Probably not if I don’t have to.

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

I finally sucked it up and ordered a new macbook pro. Macs are getting crazy expensive and I really struggled with trying to justify the purchase. My macbook is almost 8 years old now, and it seems to be doing relatively okay just for surfing on the internet… but it’s been heating up and the fan’s been whirring after using it for the first five minutes. Editing videos = major pain. I’m also a thousand years of updates behind because it won’t be able to handle it. So, I bit the bullet and pressed ‘order’.

ALSO – our move in date got pushed back. Just a little reminder that not everything pans out the way we want it to sometimes, but it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t part of the bigger plan… more shopping for me! WEEEEE!

Until next time!

I DIDN’T WASH MY HAIR FOR 30 DAYS! Hair Story Studio New Wash Challenge

HairStory Studio New Wash Product Shot

I had the opportunity to try out Hair Story Studio’s ‘New Wash’ shampoo in exchange for my honest opinion and review. I swapped out my entire hair care routine in the shower for this one product for thirty days. Here was my journey.

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate/referral links. Read the full disclosure.

My shampoo arrived packaged nicely in a box. I personally find the packaging of the product to be aesthetically pleasing; I’m all about glossy white things and minimal lettering.

Here are my in-shower products I use:Products being replaced: herbal essence shampoo, coconut oil hair mask, dove hair conditionerHerbal Essence “Honey I’m Strong” shampoo | African Gold Coconut Oil Hair Conditioner | Dove Plum & Sakura Blossom hair conditioner

So, what exactly is Hair Story Studio’s ‘New Wash’? Here is what they claim (ingredient list included below):

HairStory Studio New Wash Product Shot

Hair care really isn’t my thing. I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to hair; I rarely blowdry it, sometimes curl it, and that’s about it. To be completely honest, I don’t always remember to use the coconut oil hair mask… I literally have to push myself to use it because it feels like it’s so much work! Which leads me to the next point; I’m not one to be picky about the shampoo and conditioners I use. I’ve never been consistent with repurchasing any shampoo/conditioner except Head & Shoulders.

Before I was diagnosed with Lupus last summer, my hair was thick, coarse, and got oily real quick. After getting sick, I lost at least 50% of my hair and it has been brittle, delicate, flat, and lacks a LOT of volume. So, I’ve been on the hunt for ways to grow out my hair quicker. [[ In fact, I’ve been making smoothies (almost) daily with flaxseed and sesame seeds, in which I feel has been making a difference. ]]

My hair has always been dry but I never gave much thought into the fact that the shampoos I use may contribute to it. So when I heard of ‘New Wash’, I was excited to try something that was more natural than what I used on a regular basis.

Not gonna lie – I was extremely skeptical about using a shampoo and conditioner in one that was made with essential oils for thirty days instead of my shampoo and conditioner. HUH? That sounded way too good to be true. Not to mention how awesome it was that I could skip the step of conditioning after shampooing since this was a one step thing. YAAAASSS!

So, for thirty days, I only used New Wash as my shower product for my hair. Nothing else. The instructions were to wet my hair thoroughly, coat hair with a generous amount of product, massage into entire scalp to make sure it really gets in there and cleans, and then rinse with water. Within the first couple days, I noticed a difference with my hair – it was less frizzy after it air dried, and was a lot softer than before. I was shocked. I wish I took before photos, but I completely forgot to. However, I took some “after” photos of my hair near the end of the thirty days; here is what it looked like.

Ever since finishing my bottle of New Wash, I have gone back to using normal shampoo and conditioner again. Let me tell you – I can definitely tell the difference between using generic every-day normal shampoo/conditioner versus Hair Story New Wash. My hair is unfortunately back to being dry-er and frizzy-er (especially post shower air dry).

I would definitely recommend picking up a bottle of New Wash and giving it a whirl if you’re curious at all or looking for a natural alternative to shampoo. From my experience, it lives up to what it claims – that it cleans your hair without having the harmful ingredients in it, resulting in healthier-looking hair.

If you’re curious about how I curl my hair, I’ll be posting a video on Youtube soon about it – stay tuned! I’m currently on vacation in Seattle and having a blast… but I’m excited to come home to lots of changes, in which I will touch base about it soon!

Until next time!

On Happiness

On Happiness

What is happiness? A life-long journey that many claim that they sometimes do not even find. I always try to count my little spurts of happiness on a daily basis. But a couple weekends ago, I felt really, really happy and it just stuck with me; I’ve been itching to share it since.

A couple weekends ago, I wanted to lay out in the sun (even though I really shouldn’t be in the sun), so I slathered on SPF 50+, and told Chris, “I wanna tan in the backyard”. So, he laid out a sherpa blanket and an airplane blanket on the concrete patio of his walk-out basement suite. And then we just laid there to tan in our shorts and tshirts, while Wigmund weaved in and out between us. We put Spotify on Discover Weekly. We talked and we laughed. Chris had his coffee and I had my strawberry Milk 2 Go. We occasionally had to get up and smack all the ants getting onto the blankets. It probably looked extremely silly to the neighbours but I soaked in every moment of it. In fact, it was one of my favourite moments we’ve had. It was a lot of things… the mood, the weather, the weekend, the future, the smell of barbecue from the neighbours, my health looking up, our upcoming road trip, my relationship with my parents, my brother doing well in school and liking his part time job, my other brother being home from school, the neighbour’s french bulldog and his enthusiastic owner that wanted to have play dates as badly as we do; being with the love of my life, being with our fur baby, but most importantly… being in the now. It didn’t matter that we didn’t have a deck, fancy patio set, or a barbecue; what mattered was just being with each other and enjoying the moment. Counting my blessings and being grateful for everything that I have. Letting go and accepting the things that I don’t. And being completely okay with it. That is what happiness is.

Turtleneck Sweater and Camo Pants

Turtleneck & camo pants

Chris and I decided to visit Greater Goods one weekend. We love visiting markets/boutiques that support local vendors! There has been several popping up in Calgary and I am so excited to check them all out. It was quite chilly that day, so I decided to stay casual and wear a warm turtleneck sweater over some camo leggings (ya’ll know I love my camo)!

As I start to get older, I have a new found appreciation for more subtle looking bags as an everyday accessory. There is something super classic about a black tote bag; it’s convenient, looks good, and carries everything you could imagine carrying. I got this bag from Call It Spring – I fell in love with the simplicity of the exterior, and I am obsessed with the beautiful navy paisley print on the interior. I attached a pom pom that was in a similar colour scheme for an extra POW!

I was lusting over a particular bracelet (for a long time now) by Salt Water Tea Jewelry that finally became available in the store. I am extremely picky about jewelry… I love unique pieces and it isn’t easy finding something that I genuinely like. So… Chris, being the hunky dude of my dreams that he was, purchased it for me.

This is the bracelet. Isn’t it freaking GORGEOUS? I wear it all the time and I can’t stop oogling at it still.

This brings us to the end of my post. A lot of things have been happening in my life recently that has brought on a lot of fear, anxiety, and excitement. I am not usually one to step out of my comfort zone; I always forget that I shouldn’t get so caught up in my moments of self doubt, and that everything always works out for the best. There are some exciting times ahead of me in the next couple months; I hope to update you guys as I transition into a new, exciting chapter of my life! (Don’t forget to keep up with my vlogs if you’re interested)!

Thank you so much for following along with me!
