9 Ways to Score the Best Deal While Shopping

9 Ways to Score the Best Deal While Shopping

Happy Wednesday!

I get a lot of questions about how I always score the best deals; today I’m going to tell you how! (It really isn’t much of a secret, it’s all about being smart about how you shop!).

P.S. I am by no means some expert shopper, but I am a pretty intense bargain hunter.

First of all, let me share with you the two no brainers that will 100% give you money every time you spend:

  1. Ebates. Whenever I can, I try to shop online if the store is signed up with Ebates. Not every store is signed up with them, but quite a few are. If you don’t know your size, you can always go into store to try on first, and then purchase it online. Or, if the online store allows free returns, then you’re in luck – order different sizes to try on! Sometimes Ebates even has double cashback days – always sign up for email alerts to keep posted! Here is a link you can sign up with!
  2. A cash back credit card. For the longest time I was signed up with airmiles, however… after doing some extensive thinking, I decided to go with a cashback card. There are usually lots of promotions going around for first-time card holders, as well as several different cash back cards offering different incentives. Do your research and find out which one best suits your lifestyle!9 Ways to Score the Best Deal While Shopping
And then here are some more tips…
  3. Always, always, always look for online coupons. More often then not, a lot of retailers offer online coupons for first time shoppers/orders on their site if you sign up for their emails. Take advantage of this. Otherwise, you can always search up “name of store coupons” and sometimes online codes will pop up! Chris and I did this for pizza 73 once and we ended up getting two medium custom pizzas for something like $5 each LOL. Which brings me to the next point…
  4. Sign up for emails for the retailers you shop most frequently from. You will be the first to be notified about sales and coupon codes!
  5. GO TO THE SALE SECTION. I rarely buy anything at full price unless I am absolutely in love with it, which is, well, rare.
  6. Thrift. If you haven’t thrifted before or you have your reservations about thrifting, get over it and get into a thrift store STAT. You are missing out so hard. Everything is unique, one of a kind, or a sweet cop. Thrifting requires a lot of patience, but if you’re willing to stick it out, you can come out with lots of loots. Sometimes certain thrift stores will mark up their prices drastically, but they too, may offer special sales every now and then. For novice thrifters, Value Village does have 50% off sales and Goodwill has different coloured tag sales, so be sure to stay on top of that! And for those of you who may not be into the super vintage-y things, there are lots of local consignment stores that carry more modern, up-to-date clothing.
  7. Discount stores like Winners and Marshalls sometimes carry winners (ha ha ha) in their stores for a great price. I’ve copped a sweet pair of black ripped jeans for $13 and a black distressed denim jacket for $18 on my last trip there!
  8. Do not spend a lot on trendy items. “Trendy” items differ from person to person, however, if you don’t see yourself wearing it often down the road, don’t spend a crap ton of money on it. There are a bunch of stores (and discount stores) that sell trendy items for cheap at the mall. It may not be the best quality, but it’s a great way to try out a trend first without the investment in case it ain’t what you really want.
  9. Use an app/plugin that tells you when your items go on sale! I just started using Shoptagr, a plugin that tells me when the item on my wishlist goes on sale. I haven’t decided if I love it just yet, but it’s definitely handy to have!

And finally…. something that I am currently trying to learn is…
You will never get all the best deals.
Sometimes by the time an item you wants drops to a certain price point, the size or colour you want might not be available anymore. Use your judgment to decide whether or not you could live down how much you’re paying for something if you really want it!

How to Style: Floral Kimono

Happy Fall!

This summer has been way too hot, and extremely smoky due to the forest fires happening around Calgary. I felt like I was wearing the same thing on all my days off: shorts and a t-shirt. Luckily, fall is coming and the weather is finally cooling down! Here’s a fun look I put together that was almost all thrifted.

This floral kimono is actually a bathrobe – I saw it in the nightgown section of value village and snatched it up immediately. I love the colours of it and the silky feel; it instantly gave me coachella vibes!

The thing I’ll miss most about summer = wearing my jesus sandals! I wore them WAY too much this summer, as seen by my prominent sandal tan in the photo above, hahaha.

My 25th birthday is coming up this weekend!
I know some people aren’t huge on celebrating birthdays, and I’m usually pretty low key about mine, but this year just feels a little different… I’m actually kind of excited to turn 25! Even though I’m not doing anything “official” or “formal” about it, I’ve always felt this age was a milestone!

I’ve been dreaming about turning 25 since I was young… I *secretly* always thought I’d be married and having children at this age when I was younger. However… as time passed, I realized this was likely not the case… LOL. In fact, I feel like my life is just beginning at the end of my 24th year… life has been moving along and I have been thriving, despite the occasional setbacks.

I know I’ve been saying I will post our Portland vlog, but I’ve been kicking back and taking a LOT of naps after work…. and being lazy on the weekends. Hopefully once we figure things out with the whole move in situation (yes, it’s still not figured out yet, there’s been some hiccups!), we can start vlogging our day to day… I just do not do much during the weekdays besides going to work and napping, HAHA.

Date Night in Striped Culottes

date night: striped culottes

Happy Monday!

date night: striped culottes

Can you believe we’re almost at the end of summer? It’s been ridiculously hot in Calgary – I’m so ready for fall! Fall is my favourite season.. I love layering and cozy knits.

I’ve been extremely into culottes this year. I remember when they first started popping up, I thought to myself, “I could never wear that”! However, that quickly changed when I decided to keep the first pair I got from dynamite in a dress-pant material. I started venturing into culottes made in other fabrics and prints, which you’ll most definitely see me style throughout the next couple months! They are the perfect transition pant into fall; it can be worn to work and tied into your office attire, or be dressed casually for the weekend or a date night!

Velvet cami – Ardenes / Striped culottes – Sears / Black strappy heels – Sears / Hat – Joe Fresh / Necklace – eBay

date night: striped culottes

This is the perfect date night/girls night out outfit. It’s put together, there’s a bunch of textures, it’s fun, and the necklace packs a HUGE punch! Ya’ll know I love looking good on a budget; who doesn’t? I got these strappy heels and culottes on sale at Sears during their huge sale about a month or two ago. These pair of heels have a sturdy, chunky heel, making it super easy to walk in (note: I am not a heels type of girl – I always struggle)! It also features a turn-lock clasp on the ankle strap, adding a touch of elegance to them. The striped culottes instantly dresses up the look regardless of what you decide to wear for a top.

date night: striped culottes

This velvet lace cami I picked up from Ardene’s was SEVEN DOLLARS. I shit you not. Easily one of my most bang-for-buck purchases ever… I even picked up another one in a bigger size to layer over other pieces!

I was also able to finally get my hands on a wide brimmed, wool hat from Joe Fresh. They were having an end-of-season sale and I found this hat for $20 tucked away somewhere on a shelf. Wide brimmed hats are so easy to match with outfits and make them look that much more sophisticated!

As September slowly creeps up on us, and our move in date lurks around the corner, I can’t help but feel a little anxious about being away from home. I’ve developed a deep appreciation for my relationship with my parents and cherish the time I get to spend with them. I’m so grateful to have fantastic, polar opposite parents who’ve given me a vast perspective on life and two brothers who always make the effort to go by my room in the evening to talk about our day. I’m feeling emotional as I write this, and I can’t imagine how I’m going to be like moving day!

Canmore, Alberta: East End Of Rundle hike

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

HAPPY THURSDAY!
Oh, my, goodness…. you guys.
For a while now Chris has been saying how much he wanted to head out to the mountains and hike, but our summer has been pretty busy and it’s been effing HOT. He mentioned wanting to hike up East End of Rundle (EEOR), but was wary going with me as I exhaust easily since being sick (I literally must nap in-between events when we have a jam packed day).  However…. I was set to prove him wrong.

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

Keep in mind I have zero interest or experience in exercising in any way, shape, or form. I have never scrambled before. Nor do I have hiking shoes. Or anything hiking related. I’ve always enjoyed going out to the mountains to look at them… but achieving hikes rated as “difficult” on trail peak has never been my thing. The most difficult hike I did was last summer; we did Bourgeau Lake (that one is hella long), and it was a pretty big feat for me!

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

We decided to head out late Saturday afternoon two weekends ago due to the weather (it was going to be pretty hot) and because we wanted to catch sunset on the mountain. We actually drove out to the wrong place and hiked down Goat Creek Trail by accident thinking it was EEOR. Approximately 20-25 minutes into the hike we realized we were not in the right place, so we hiked back up and drove back out to try to find the beginning of Rundle. Turns out it was a random little pathway on the side of the road that went straight uphill and looked super sketch. There was also a sign warning us not to touch a bomb if we saw one. Nice.

East End Of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

I wore Nike Roshes that day (It was my only pair of sneakers I had at Chris’ place that day) thinking it would be fine, but boy, WAS I WRONG. It was not bad going uphill at all, in fact, it was actually pretty fun! I was crawling on all fours at some point because it was pretty steep (and I’m a chicken) but I trucked on.

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

As we continued to go uphill, a sinking feeling sat in my chest as I realized this was going to be a bitch going down… I was pretty sure I was going to lose my toenails from my foot hitting up against my shoes going downhill (It happened on our hike back from Bourgeau). Renee shared her power-up gummies with us that she got from MEC and I was dead sure it worked because I had crazy bursts of energy going uphill, hahaha!

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

The view at the top was so worth it! It was actually very windy and cloudy that day (it drizzled on us a bit as we went downhill). I saw marmots for the very first time in my life and it was kinda fun to see! A squirrel was on the prowl for Long’s sandwich and he attempted to lure it several times for photos (as seen below):

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta
Renee lent me her walking sticks to go downhill, but my shoes were a poor choice and I was sliding everywhere regardless… not gonna lie, I wasn’t sure if I would make it down in one piece. I kept eyeing the helicopter that flew overhead and wondered if I would need to make the call, HAHAHA. I ended up sliding down basically the entire mountain on my ass, lifting myself with my wrists and legs. I looked like an idiot and it was probably 100x more work than I needed to put in if I had better shoes. Although, I do have to give Long and Chris lots of kudos for making it down fine in their runners, they made it look like a stroll while I lagged behind, and Renee was behind me encouraging me the whole way down, HAHAHA. We actually hiked in the dark near the last quarter of the hike, as the sun went down. We were off path for what seemed like forever, sliding down random rocks and being confused about where we were. I was terrified we were going to get eaten by bears!

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

All in all, it was a surprisingly fun hike going up and a total hell hole coming down. Note to self to get proper hiking boots next time, and maybe a hike with no scrambling or traversing involved (just kidding, but not really). Would I do it again? … Probably not if I don’t have to.

East End of Rundle Hike Canmore Alberta

I finally sucked it up and ordered a new macbook pro. Macs are getting crazy expensive and I really struggled with trying to justify the purchase. My macbook is almost 8 years old now, and it seems to be doing relatively okay just for surfing on the internet… but it’s been heating up and the fan’s been whirring after using it for the first five minutes. Editing videos = major pain. I’m also a thousand years of updates behind because it won’t be able to handle it. So, I bit the bullet and pressed ‘order’.

ALSO – our move in date got pushed back. Just a little reminder that not everything pans out the way we want it to sometimes, but it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t part of the bigger plan… more shopping for me! WEEEEE!

Until next time!

Mauve sweatpants

mauve sweatpants, cropped top, and bomber jacket

Good evening!
Hope you guys had a great weekend!
I purchased a pair of mauve sweatpants (as shown in my Forever 21 haul) that I absolutely love! Chris & I thought this would be a fun outfit to shoot in front of a mural here in Calgary and the photos turned out awesome! Although these sweatpants ended up being a bit too big and baggy on me, the drawstrings did the trick.

For those of you living in Calgary, you’ve probably seen this wall a million times. It’s so funky and random!

Pairing high waisted things with crop tops are a great way to keep yourself covered while showing a bit of skin. When it comes to clothes, I’m a little shy about revealing too much, so this was perfect!

Renee, Chris, Long & I hiked up EEOR this past weekend. I’ll have a quick post on it soon to share some of the views from the top. Being my first scrambling experience, it was definitely gruelling coming down but so much fun climbing up! Note to self to stop wearing my Nike Roshes to hike because they are terrible hiking shoes.

Patterned Wide-Legged Trousers

Happy Monday!
I thought it’d be fun to style this pair of patterned wide-legged trousers for this post; I can’t get enough of patterned pants! Truthfully, I’ve had several pairs of similar pants like these stashed in the back of my closet for several years now (my mother always told me how awesome they looked, and although I never agreed, I just bought then anyways and never wore them). As I continue to mature, my style is constantly evolving, and patterned pants have become a new love. So, alas, I’ve started whipping these pants out of the bottom of my drawers.

These pants are from Garage; they’re silky and flowy and everything wonderful for the summer! The dark blue makes it easy to match a variety of tops.

A white, crisp collared tank really elevates the look of these pants. If you wanted to wear it out more casually, it could easily be paired with a plain tee/tank or even a band t-shirt with a fun handbag! These pants are a tad bit too long for sneakers, so a pair of heeled sandals/shoes are preferred. However, it also gives you more height so that the pants don’t swallow you up!

Fun fact: we came across this establishment randomly and I loved the way the pictures turned out!

It’s been a crazy busy month for us! We found a place to rent, the new job is going well, a couple of weddings are coming up… I anticipate the rest of the summer/fall to be full of more changes and growth. If you asked me if this was where I saw myself five years ago, I would’ve told you no. I’ve always led a fairly ‘straight’ path of going to school, graduating university in four years, finding a good job, buying a house in the burbs, etc, etc. Never did I think I would rent, work where I work now (ever), nor did I think I would live central (soon) or move in with my boyfriend (hello, conservative asian parents!). Sometimes I think becoming ill was a blessing in disguise for many reasons; it changed the course of what I thought the path my life was supposed to take. It was taught and brought so many unexpected things to the table for me.

I am so thankful for everything.

Royal Blue Pyjama Pants

Royal Blue Pyjama Pants

Good morning! I am back with another how to style patterned/pyjama pants post today. Sateen pants are so comfortable to hang out and lounge around in! These royal blue pyjama pants are super fun for the summer. For this look, I paired it with a white chiffon button up. I love royal blue and think the orange triangles adds such a fun pop of colour to this look! I also opted for a pair of nude wedges to keep the pants the centre of attention.

I thought it’d be fun to make this outfit a bit more summery feeling by tying a little bow with the front of the blouse. As always, if you want to opt for a more formal or put together look, all you have to do is just tuck the shirt in!

We are still in the process of looking for a place. It’s been hard not to get ahead of myself with oogling at furniture and decor! I’ve also started my new job and it’s been an exciting change from what I’m used to. Things are going really well and we’re hoping to book a winter vacation soon!

And yes – I am still working on editing our Seattle vlog. In the meanwhile, you can watch our Vancouver vlog that I uploaded last week! Hope you’re all doing well! xo
